American Idol gives back

by Becky Tennant

As Bethany and I have hinted at in the recap blog, this week on American Idol is “Idol Gives Back.”

“Idol Gives Back” is a special two-night event airing Tuesday and Wednesday. The show is geared to promote awareness and, hopefully, raise funds for the organizations that provide relief programs to help youth living in extreme poverty in Africa and America.

Over the past few shows, host Ryan Seacrest has been showing the public snippets of the Idol judges and himself visiting these poverty ravished young children. We’ve been shown the softer side of Simon in Africa, while he showed what a little more than $100.00 could buy a school in Africa.

Several celebrities and corporate sponsors have chosen to donate either their time or money to help this good cause. Corporate sponsors include, Ford, Coca-Cola, and AT & T. Celebrities that are scheduled to appear are Kelly Clarkson, Hugh Grant, Keira Knightly, Gwen Stefani, Michael Buble and several others.

The top six finalists will still compete by singing songs considered “life anthems” and someone will get the boot on Wednesday’s show. But there will be an added bonus when you call your vote in. For every vote cast, sponsors will donate money to “Idol Gives Back.” This total could be phenomenal considering there have been at times 30-40 million votes cast.

So, everyone watch the show Tuesday April 24 (8:00-9:00 PM EST), and call in and vote, even if you don’t usually do it. This is a good cause. And it’s great to see the people of American Idol doing something good with their profound popularity.

Does anybody else fear that this whole "life anthem" concept is undoubtedly going to devolve into a whole night of "Wind Beneath My Wings" and "You Raise Me Up"?

I hate when entertainers find a purpose for their profound popularity. Just sing. Please. Entertain me. Don't clomp around the stage singing melodramatic, old, sad-bastard music.

Remember when TV and pop music used to be fun? Damn.

I feel obligated to blog something more in-depth on this.

"Old, sad-bastard music"....LMAO! How about, "Hero" by Enrique Iglesius? :)

How about I jam a screwdriver in my ear instead of listening to somebody sing "Hero" by Enrique Iglesius? :)

I am not looking forward to this week of idol really. I understand why they chose "life anthems" to go along with the whole idol gives back theme, but my goodness the whole two days might throw me into a bout of depression!

I want fun and upbeat tunes!

Well, if AI can raise the kind of money they're talking about, then you can suffer through "Hero" and a bout of depression, right?

I guess you are right, it will make it easier for me to flip back and forth though between idol and Dancing with the stars though!

The cynic in me says that they could raise this kind of money without putting us through two nights of agony. But, then no one would no how wonderful they all are.

I mean, really, look at what they're doing. They're tearing lives apart. Look at poor Becky! She's in the throws of depression. I hope they're all happy with themselves.

I'm with Becky. I want happy, upbeat tunes! And I want Gina Glocksen back, but that's another issue.

I wouldn't go as far as to say I would like Gina Glockson back, but of course this is coming from the girl who wanted Rudy to go farther than what he did :-(

I guess as long as I have you tim to keep me laughing with your cynical remarks, i think i will be able to avoid the depression that is looming with tonights show.

Lets hope that when we do the recap blog tomorrow that I am not sinking into that deep dark oblivion...

Wouldn't it be great if someone came out and sang "Celebration" by Kool and The gang!!!
Now theres a life anthem for ya Tim!

Tim,
Gina is gone you are going to have to find a way to cope without her. Hopefully she will be at Post Gazette Pavilion this summer on the idol tour so you can get your fix. I hope that you can make it until then. As for the show tonight, you are right about them tooting their own horn. We will have to endure an hour of how great AI is for the world.

Okay, let me say this...above all, I liked Gina's style...rocker chics are cool...but I did find her kind of attractive, as well..I'd put her on my list, I think

Hey, now you're talking, Becky! I've seen Kool and The Gang in concert twice, so I would totally dig that. In a semi-related factoid about me: I've also seen The Village People live three times. Shudder.

I agree with you Tim about Gina's style, I go a little rocker chic myself sometimes!
But in regards to the Village People admission Tim, sometimes there are things that are best left in the closet...

Kool and the Gang rocked though!

The Village People??????

Oh, Tim. I thought the Wedding Belles admission was brave of you, but this. Dude!

Drastic action is required. I'm going to have to send you all those dreadful Terminator movies, so you can amp up your testosterone. If you don't man up soon, I fear you may spend your days watching Oprah and Lifetime original movies and listening to Carly Simon.

Perhaps you need a little "manly" time with your pal Jack Logar on the back of his motorcycle.

Wait... That came out all wrong...

First, let me say, that only someone completely at ease with his masculinity and hetero status could make that kind of admission...

Yes, I've seen them three times...but at no point did I actively seek them out. I wasn't calling TicketMaster for dates and locations of their nearest shows...for anyone who's interested, I'll tell the whole story on my own blog...

As for "ramping up" the testosterone, no Terminator for me. I've never been a big fan. Maybe a Clint Eastwood western or two, instead.

Oh, and Becky, exactly how much rocker chic are we talking here?

Anonymous said...

Tim, you've been honest about your omission about the Village People and I respect that. Deep down inside of me is a little bit of rocker chic, I'll admit it, I like to listen to some rock music every now and then, i've pondered the tattoo thing and i've even thought of getting a piercing....oh wait i did that....anyways i guess we all have these little deep dark persona's that we dont readily reveal to the world, mine is the rocker chic thing, yours is the Village People.

Anonymous said...

Okay, The Village People is not a "persona" for me...lol...it's just an interesting, little-known fact that I've seen them three times...not something I'm proud of :)

My advice on the tattoo is, "Do it." Tattoos are cool. I have two (and, no, neither one is of the Village People). Just remember, it lasts forever, so I'd advise against cartoon characters or your boyfriend's name.

What kind of piercing? Nose? Lip? Eyebrow? (I'm curious by nature.)

Anonymous said...

I am undecided on my tattoo which is one of the reasons why I havent yet taken that leap. I also can't get any of my friends to go with me, I like to share my pain with others see....Maybe Jen will go?

About the piercing, if i told you my ears would that satiate your curiosity?

Anonymous said...

Something tells me that you're hiding something, Becky...I'd say it's something other than your ears :)

I'll go with you to get a tattoo...I love to watch other people suffer...lol!

Anonymous said...

Ah a man who likes to watch other people suffer....no wonder you dont like the whole "idol gives back" idea? Just kidding...

Downside of accompaning me to the tattoo parlor...whoever goes with me has to get a new one too, I would like try to talk Tube Talk girl into going with me!

Anonymous said...

Does that mean that Tube Talk Girl already has at least one?

Inquiring minds want to know!

The day I get a tat is the day "BJ and the Bear" has a reunion movie.

Tim, do tell about your tats. What are they? Wait. Let me guess, um... does it say, "I love the YMCA?" :)

Anonymous said...

I have the word "Elwood" tatooed across my knuckles...and I have a big "50" tattooed on my back (just like 50 Cent, for those who aren't down)...

I'm thinking we should all take a field trip to Thinkin' Ink...tattoos for everybody...I know I'm itching to get a new one...who's with me?

Anonymous said...

ps...why dou you have to hate on "BJ and The Bear"? :)

Anonymous said...

Come on Tube Talk girl, lets take a field trip, I know Bethany is game!

I love being the bad influence (evil grin)...lol...come on Tube Talk Girl...all of your friends are going to do it...it'll make you look cool
