Goodbye Men in Trees: Series finale airs tonight

by Jennifer Squires Biller

Greetings, fellow TV fans. Please join me in a moment of silence, as I mourn the passing of one of the quirkiest shows to be broadcast in years.

Tonight is the series finale of Men in Trees on ABC. It’s our final hour with Marin, Plow Guy, Buzz, Jack and the gang.

I could spend the majority of this column verbally abusing the insanely out-of-touch ABC decision makers who gave this show no chance because of all its schedule hiatuses and time changes, but that would sour what is supposed to be a touching tribute to a show that has made me smile since its debut.

Here’s a quick look at why I adored this show and why I’ll be crying in my diet Pepsi tonight.

Alaska never looked so inviting:
I know it’s not really Alaska, since the show is shot in Vancouver. But, Men in Trees featured some of the most beautiful outdoor shots ever shown on a television show. It made me want to book a trip to Vancouver.

Mai Washington’s one-liners: Actress Lauren Tom can deliver a one-liner like no one else on television. All she has to do is roll her eyes at husband Buzz (John Amos) and toss out her nickname for him, “Old man,” in that accent and I dissolve into a fit of laughter.

Celebrating the simple life: The folks of Elmo are a simple lot. Give them a beer at the Chieftan and something to gossip about at the bar, and life is good. It was a nice change of television pace to see nature, friendships, and family explored in a television show instead of championing the cutthroat, fast-paced lipstick jungle shown so often in network television.

Romance: Television shows sometimes cross the line from fun, exciting romance to sappy soap dramas. Men in Trees never crossed that line. From interracial relationships (Buzz and Mai) to couples from opposite lifestyles falling in love (Sam the “plow guy” and Jane,) there was always humor in every story.

Well-written plots: This show had such a quaint feel from the start that I was concerned that the interesting plot premise would quickly fizzle out. It didn’t. Ultimately, Men in Trees was a show about relationships and the differences between men and women. Each story beautifully illustrated the differences while showing us that all of us seem happier when finding that special connection with someone.

In closing, thank you Jenny Bicks for creating such a gem of a show. I’m sorry it didn’t get better treatment from the network, but you should know that you touched viewers, including this one.

Goodbye Men in Trees. You’ll be missed.

So sad that this show ended. Nice tribute, Tube Talk Girl.

Great ending to a great show. ABC, it's your loss.

It left us in limbo with Patrick. Will he find true love again??? Its not fair another good show is cancelled.

I loved the fact that Patrick and Annie didn't end up together. Realistically, I don't think any woman would choose whiney, effiminate Patrick over the sexy, confidan Ivan, especially in light of how Patrick treated Annie over the past year.

It was a realistic ending, and I applaud the show for not reconciling this couple. It always seemed like a strange match to me.

I just watched the finale online because I completely forgot about it last week. It was such an amazing show. I too had reservations about where the show was going in the first few episodes. But I decided to stay with it & I'm so glad I did. Just like Veronica Mars, it didn't last very long, but it will still go down as one of my favorite shows of all times.

I liked how the finale had a realistic feel about it. I like how there was no marriage proposal between Jack & Marrin. While I was expecting one, I like how they just showed them going strong in their relationship in the end. I'm not sure what to think about the whole Annie/Patrick thing though. It was kind of depressing watching them not end up together in the end, because I always though they were a cute couple. But I guess it was realistic with how he treated her the past year. But that was still pretty sad. Over all good finale & amazing show. MIT you will be missed!

Does anyone know where I can view the final episode? It is not on ABC's Web site anymore and I really want to see it.

Thanks

I finally found the last episode of Men In Trees on Sidereel.com. It is in 2 parts, but it is actually there!

This was one show I never missed and I can't believe it has ended. What a shame. I'm at a loss ABC. What are you guys thinking????

I don't know if anyone can answer this, but with enough griping would ABC by any chance change its mind?? Or, once a show is officially cancelled, is that it?.... I'm so sad about MIT - it truly was an awesome show and I will miss it this fall.

I, too an very unhappy this show is no more. The tribute you posted couldn't have said it better. With all of the junk on TV these days, Men in Trees was a nice change.

ABC- Bad move!

What a wonderful show. My husband use to call it our "date show" were we would cuddle up in front of the tv and enjoy the people of Elmo together.
If the people at ABC would have put a much time into MIT as they did "Lost" maybe more people could "Found" Men In Trees and enjoy the show as much as we did.We will all miss a great show this fall!!!!

The episode on June 11th was the end?? I guess I am out of the loop but I felt like there was no closure...I was waiting for a few more episodes before it ended; big bummer! I agree with all that ABC made a HUGE mistake cancelling this show. It was one of the good ones. What's next; my other favorite show? Grey's Anatomy?

This was an incredibly refreshing show... I was very disappointed that it was cancelled as well. Hopefully, somehow, another network will pick it up. I have been missing this show since the last episode. Very disappointed in ABC for cancelling yet another great show...

Hi I'm a boy, 14 years ol, and from Central-Europe. I really loved this show. However this episode wasn't the proper "happy-end last episode". After I watched it , I still had some questions.

Help again...I looked at Sidereel, and the last episode I saw listed was episode 19 Taking the Lead. Is that the Finale?

For what little television I do watch, I want ABC to know that Men in Trees was one of the shows I did watch.

Sorry to see it end.

Maybe ABC will have a change of heart and bring the show back.

WE just got this show in Barbados and I fell in love with it from the first episode. I am heartbroken after finding out it will not continue. It is such a refreshing break from the sudsy soaps and the nonsensical sitcoms. So Sooorry to see it go.
Can I get the series on DVD?

I'm not sure if it's coming out yet, but if you check TVshowsonDVD.com, they always have a good list of what shows are coming out! I miss it, too, especially in light of this season's disappointing shows!

ABC must have some serious problems. they obviously have no idea which shows are good. Men In Trees was one of the best ever. I see now they have added Dirty Sexy Money, and a couple of others to their kick em out campaign. Too Bad.I though TV was suppose to be entertaing? I to do not watch but a couple of shows be hey jeep the ones that entertain. NO more TV fan
