CBS unveils fall schedule: Jericho cancelled

CBS is introducing five new shows this fall, including one comedy, three dramas and one reality series, according to the press release from the network I just found in my e-mail box.

As for what won’t be returning, sorry Jericho fans, it’s done. The show apparently wasn’t da bomb with the network.

The Amazing Race and The New Adventures of Old Christine are scheduled to return midseason, so don’t panic that they aren’t included on the fall schedule.

And all of you Ghost Whisperer fans who’ve been e-mailing me (who knew there were so many of you?) relax. Jennifer Love is back in all her glory.

My favorite CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother is back, too. Can I get a Woo-Hoo?

Also returning are: CSI: Miami, NCIS, The Unit, Criminal Minds, CSI: NY, Without A Trace, Ghost Whisperer, Numb3rs, Cold Case, Shark, 48 Hours: Mystery, Crimetime Saturday, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, Two And A Half Men, Rules Of Engagement; 60 Minutes, and Survivor.

CBS is introducing some interesting new shows this fall, including Viva Laughlin, a mystery drama with a musical element; Cane, starring Jimmy Smits as the head of a powerful South Florida Cuban-American family; Moonlight, a romantic thriller with a new twist on the vampire legend; The Big Bang Theory, a comedy about genius geeks from Two and A Half Men co-creator Chuck Lorre; and Kid Nation, a reality series where 40 kids will try to build a new society in an abandoned ghost town.

Here’s the complete primetime schedule, with a synopsis of the new shows at the end. New shows are listed in bold.

New Shows:
COMEDY
THE BIG BANG THEORY
— A comedy from the Emmy Award nominated Co-Creator and Executive Producer of "Two and a Half Men" Chuck Lorre, about brainy best friends Leonard (Johnny Galecki, "Roseanne") and Sheldon (Jim Parsons "Judging Amy"), who can tell you anything you want to know about quantum physics, but when it comes to dealing with everyday life here on earth they're lost in the cosmos. Neither fully understands that scientific principles don't always apply in matters of the heart — until they meet their sexy new neighbor Penny (Kaley Cuoco, "8 Simple Rules…"), a friendly screenwriter/waitress from the midwest who also happens to be newly single. She quickly makes an impression on the other members of Leonard and Sheldon's geek squad — Howard Wolowitz (Simon Helberg, "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip"), who portrays himself as the Casanova of Cal Tech, and fellow whiz kid Rajesh Koothrappali (Kunal Nayyar, "NCIS"), who is rendered speechless around anyone unprepared to converse about the Theory of Relativity or other scientific jargon. The chemistry between this gaggle of geniuses and a delightful damsel is about to undergo a stimulating series of inter-personal experiments. Multiple Emmy Award winner James Burrows ("Will & Grace") directed the pilot. Lorre and Bill Prady ("Gilmore Girls," "Dharma & Greg") are executive producers for Warner Bros. Television.

DRAMAS
VIVA LAUGHLIN — Executive produced by Tony and Emmy Award winner Hugh Jackman ("The Boy from Oz," "X-Men"), VIVA LAUGHLIN is a mystery drama with music about eternal optimist and freewheeling businessman Ripley Holden, whose sole ambition is to run a casino in Laughlin, Nev. Occasionally using upbeat contemporary songs to accentuate the drama and humor and advance the story, the series is based on the hit BBC show "Viva Blackpool." Ripley (Lloyd Owen, "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles") is the ultimate gambler with an infectious personality who is on the brink of making a killing… just as soon as he opens his casino that's nowhere near completion. When his financing suddenly falls through, the fearless and tenacious Ripley approaches his enemy — dashing, sarcastic, wealthy casino owner Nicky Fontana (Hugh Jackman) for help. Though the odds are stacked against him, Ripley doesn't miss a beat, even when he becomes embroiled in a murder investigation after the body of his ex-business partner is found at his club. At home, Ripley uses his dry wit to adjust to the demands of his family: his gorgeous wife, Natalie (Madchen Amick, "ER"), wants more attention; his teenage daughter, Cheyenne (Ellen Woglom, "The O.C."), wants his approval; and his son, Jack (Carter Jenkins, "Surface"), wants to help him at work. All of this adversity would defeat a lesser man, but for the outgoing and passionate Ripley there's no such thing as bad news, only deals to be struck and wagers to be won in the intoxicating neon glow of Laughlin, where the cards are on the table, romance is in the air and lively music is on the stage. Eric Winter ("Wildfire") and D.B. Woodside ("24") also star. Directed by Gabriele Muccino ("The Pursuit of Happyness"). Golden Globe Award nominee Hugh Jackman, John Palermo ("X-Men: The Last Stand"), Bob Lowry ("Huff"), Paul Telegdy and Peter Bowker ("Viva Blackpool") are executive producers for BBC Worldwide Productions, Seed Productions, CBS Paramount Network Television in association with Sony Pictures Television.

CANE — Stars Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Jimmy Smits ("The West Wing") in an epic drama about the external rivalries and internal power struggles of a large Cuban-American family running an immensely successful rum and sugar business in South Florida. When the family patriarch, Pancho (Hector Elizondo, "Chicago Hope"), is offered a lucrative but questionable deal by his bitter adversary, the Samuels, to purchase thousands of acres of sugar fields, he's faced with a tough choice: Should he cash out of the sugar business and focus solely on rum, which would please his impulsive natural son, Frank (Nestor Carbonell, "Lost"), or protect the family legacy that he built from the ground up by not selling, and side with his adopted son, Alex (Smits), who mistrusts the Samuels and still sees value in sugar. Alex and Frank's approach to business is as different as their approach to life. While Frank might lose focus chasing women, Alex is deeply in love with his beautiful wife, Isabel (Paola Turbay, "Bailando por un SueƱo"), who is also Pancho's daughter. Married when she was just 17 years old, Isabel balances Alex by choosing not to involve herself in the business, focusing instead on their three children, who are determined to forge their own paths outside the family. For the Duques, will family allegiance come first or will their secrets and acrimonious conflicts over love, lust and control of the family fortune be their downfall? Eddie Matos ("General Hospital"), Rita Moreno ("West Side Story"), Michael Trevino ("The Riches"), Lina Esco ("CSI: NY"), Sam Carman ("Bones"), Alona Tal ("Veronica Mars") and Polly Walker ("Rome") also star. Cynthia Cidre ("The Mambo Kings"), Jonathan Prince ("American Dreams"), Jimmy Iovine ("8 Mile") and Polly Anthony ("Lifehouse: Live in Portland!") are the executive producers for ABC Studios in association with CBS Paramount Network Television.

MOONLIGHT — From prolific movie producer Joel Silver ("The Matrix," Trilogy), is about Mick St. John (Alex O'Loughlin, upcoming "White Out"), a captivating "undead" private investigator who uses his acute vampire senses to help the living… instead of feeding on them. In an agonizing twist of fate, Mick was "bitten" 60 years ago by his new bride, the seductive and beguiling Coraline (Amber Valletta, "Hitch"). Immortal and eternally as young, handsome and charismatic as he was then, Mick is sickened by Coraline and other vampires who view humans only as a source of nourishment. With only a handful of undead confidantes for company, including deceitful ally Josef (Rade Serbedzija, "24"), Mick fills his infinite days protecting the living, and trying not to think about how his life would have been if he hadn't followed his heart. However, after six decades of resisting, he wonders if it's time to pursue the love of a mortal. He has his eyes on Beth Turner, a beautiful, ambitious reporter who has been covering the ongoing plague of unusual murders. But would Beth even consider giving up a normal life to be with him, and can Mick risk the pain of seeing himself as a monster in her eyes? As Mick lives between two realities, fighting his adversaries among the undead and falling in love with Beth, he knows he needs to figure out a reason to keep "living." MOONLIGHT is directed by executive producer Rod Holcomb ("ER"). Joel Silver, Ron Koslow ("Birds of Prey"), Trevor Munson and Gerard Bocaccio are also executive producers for Warner Bros. Television.

The new reality series is:

KID NATION is a reality-based series in which 40 kids will have 40 days to build a new world — in a ghost town that died in the 19th Century. These kids, ages 8-15, will spend more than a month without their parents or modern comforts in Bonanza City, N.M., attempting to do what their forefathers could not — build a town that works. They will cook their own meals, clean their own outhouses, haul their own water and even run their own businesses — including the old town saloon (root beer only). They'll also create a real government — four kid leaders who will guide the group through their adventure, pass laws and set bedtimes. Through it all, they'll cope with regular childhood emotions and situations: homesickness, peer pressure and the urge to break every rule they've ever known. At the end of each episode, all 40 kids will gather at an old fashioned Town Hall meeting where they will debate the issues facing Bonanza City. They'll show wisdom beyond their years and the unflinching candor that only kids can exhibit. There are no eliminations on KID NATION — you only go home if you want to. And in every Town Hall meeting, kids may raise their hands and leave. Will they stick it out? In the end, will these kids prove to adults everywhere (and their own parents!) that they have the vision to build a better world than the pioneers who came before them? And just as importantly, will they come together as a cohesive unit, or will they abandon all responsibility and succumb to the childhood temptations that lead to round-the-clock chaos? KID NATION is produced by Emmy Award winner Tom Forman ("Extreme Makeover: Home Edition") for Tom Forman Prods. and Good TV, Inc.

The new summer reality series is:

POWER OF 10, hosted by award-winning comedian Drew Carey ("The Drew Carey Show"), is a high-stakes game that challenges contestants to guess the behaviors, opinions and lifestyle choices of the American public for the chance to win $10 million. POWER OF 10 polls thousands of people across the U.S. asking them, well, just about everything — from "What percentage of married Americans said they were virgins the day they got married?" to "What percentage of American's believe they are smarter than the president?" Each week, contestants must decide if they have their finger on the pulse of the American majority and can accurately predict the results of these nationwide surveys. With the first question worth $1,000 and only five questions to answer, each one increasing 10 times in value, contestants participate in a potentially lucrative game where they just might walk away with $10 million. The higher they are on the money ladder, the closer they must be to the actual statistic. The studio audience and a friend can help them, but the final answer is theirs. Michael Davies ("Who Wants to be a Millionaire") is executive producer for Embassy Row in association with Sony Pictures Television.

The new midseason series is:

SWINGTOWN, from the director of "Big Love" and "Rome," peeks into the shag-carpeted suburban homes of the 1970s to find couples reveling in the sexual and social revolution that introduced open marriages, women's liberation and challenged many conventional wisdoms. During this heady era of provocative change, Susan (Molly Parker, "Deadwood") and Bruce Miller (Jack Davenport, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest") move their family to an affluent Chicago suburb in search of a different sense of community, and they look forward to barbecues and get-togethers with their new neighbors, as well as a change of pace for their teenage daughter and pre-teen son. Enter Tom (Grant Show, "Melrose Place") and Trina (Lana Parrilla, "24") Decker, a striking, outgoing couple on the hunt who redefine the term "neighborhood watch." After a mind-blowing evening with them, Susan and Bruce realize that couples in this town share much more than recipes, local gossip and a view of Lake Michigan, and are worlds apart from their former conservative neighbors, Janet (Miriam Shor, "Big Day") and Roger (Josh Hopkins, "Brothers & Sisters") Thompson. Susan's loyal friend Janet is appalled by what she witnesses in this new neighborhood, while Roger, though dutiful to his wife, may be more intrigued than she knows. In a changing social climate — defined by its music, fashion and style — everyone in SWINGTOWN is confronted with personal choices, experimentation and shifting attitudes. Shanna Collins ("Wildfire"), Aaron Howles and Brittany Robertson ("Freddie") also star. Mike Kelley ("The O.C.") and director Alan Poul ("Six Feet Under") are executive producers for CBS Paramount Network Television.

CBS had a real winner on it’s hands with Jericho, so what did they do? How about a 3 month hiatus, oh, and then schedule it opposite American Idol, and finally gripe about it’s ratings dropping… That’s CBS’ idea of how to treat a heavily serialized show and it’s audience. No way I am giving the time of day to the mindless drivel they are airing this fall. It appears that a thinking person’s TV options are more and more limited every season.

But the viewers of Jericho (myself included) have also decided to fight to save the show against overwhelming odds, and to let CBS know we mean business we are mailing nuts (any kind of nuts) to the programming department in reference to a line from the episode ‘Why We Fight’. So, if we succeed life is good, if not CBS employees will have a lifetime supply of nuts.

Please help us save Jericho - if the bombs didn't get Jericho - CBS wants to finish them off.

They just made one of the best season endings that I have ever seen, and then they pull the plug and leave everyone hanging.

Nice one CBS -you did it again to your past-loyal viewers.

CBS handled Jericho very poorly. They come up with a brilliant, serialized show, then pull it off the air from November to February just as its ratings are starting to surge. Of course they're going to lose steam. Then it's on opposite American Idol. Thus the ratings drop.

What is the intelligent things to do? Move it to another night or time perhaps so it can stand on that awesome plot and good reviews to build the audience again?

No, cancel it, declare the serialized format a failure, and replace it with a child exploitation reality show.

This is the most ridiculous show cancellation of all-time! Jericho deserves better, and deserves a second season pickup as much as any show ever has.

Nuts to CBS. You made a Monster mistake...maybe this show has legs! I sent this to TNT!

We are a motley crew, this band of brothers, resistance members us all. We fight for purpose and for meaning. I am but one among many....a philosopher waxing poetic over my favorite show Jericho. There are many of us that are angry over the canceling of this show. Anger will get us nowhere; it is an evil emotion that motivates, but never brings a positive outcome. What will get us somewhere, is hope. The hope is that your network can see the potential of this show. The premise is beyond reproach, certainly it is a most moving and thought provoking vehicle, that is far better than most of the shows on television. It is a show that makes us think...think about our views, lives, and our interaction with each other...especially that....our interaction with each other. This show is far, far more than a nuclear war hits the USA show! We see how a small town and another town nearby(in Kansas terms) reacts to nuclear war, the lack of credible information, and food. We see the larger picture(the nation) from a smaller screen, and we learn about ourselves.

Give us a chance to learn about ourselves and find out that behind the Democrat/Republican, liberal/conservative, black/white facade there is something more substanial....an American! Restore Jericho to the airwaves and you will be richly rewarded with a following that will surprise you with it's size and voice. Ted Turner, my fellow native Georgian, and champion of the underdog, turned a family billboard company in the small town of Macon, into a world-wide network empire and a losing baseball team( the Atlanta Braves) into the greatest team in baseball(I'm a southerner.... the Yankees don't count!). You can do the same! As Ted once said...."Lead, follow, or get the HELL out of the way!". TNT, like Ted Turner, is a leader! Please save Jericho!

CBS lost me as a viewer when they cancelled Jericho -- I am switching to a new network for all my news, sports and other entertainment.

Nuts to you CBS. I am in that 18-49 demographic and I am done with you.

I know that many of us (34 friends/family in my small community that I know of are boycotting CBS) are outraged by not only the incomplete story of Jericho, but also the quality of the program replacing it and the total disregard CBS has towards its customers. I feel as though I have been slapped in the face after reading a report that a CBS executive said that Jericho fans would just have to get over the fact that it has been canceled. The superior attitude displayed shows just how much concern this company has towards its customers. CBS should be ashamed! I hope that the sponsors and affiliates are taking notes!

CBS's decision to cancel Jericho is a terrible one. It was the best show on their network - it had a unique premise and it was doing good in the ratings until their practically endless hiatus and decision to bring it back against American Idol. But instead of giving it a chance on another night, they just cancel it - without even giving it an ending. And as for Kid Nation as it's replacement - seriously? SERIOUSLY?

SAVE JERICHO!

CBS has to many junk shows now. Then they get rid of the only show they did have JERICHO.Shows like survivor, csi(ANY),and now kid nation.I have five children ages 15,13,9,8,and 7.They said, when i asked them about kid nation,in their words."BORING".Please save JERICHO

Bad decision to cancel Jericho, CBS. It was a great show with a dedicated fan base. CBS caused the ratings drop due to the mid season hiatus: a similar decision by ABC caused LOST's ratings to drop. Worse still, CBS left 8 million viewers with a cliff hanger and slapped them in the face. No More CBS in my household.

Look at ABC and the mega-success of Lost.
Look at NBC and the mega-success of Heroes.

What CBS show is the most comparable to the same genre and audience of those two shows?

Jericho!

You didn't give it enough time, to continue to grow. Plus, you made a horribly bad decision slotting it opposite American Idol.

Revive and un-cancel Jericho, and move it to a decent time-slot, and give it one more year.

The Jericho audience is the Lost/Heroes audience.

Wake up and realize you have a great show with Jericho.

The best new show on CBS.
The 2nd best new show on all Networks.

NUTS!!! to CBS!

What other show have you seen that has such a loyal fan base?! Carole Barbee recently was interviewed on an online internet talk show. She said that Execs @ CBS commented that Jericho by far had the most loyal fan base ever seen with a show.

Therefore fellow fans, It is up to us!! Join us and our movement @

http://savejericho.wetpaint.com

Sign the online petition to save Jericho @:

http://www.petitiononline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?09272006

We can make a difference! We can make our voices heard ! All the angry sentiments thrust at CBS wont further our cause. We have to show that Jericho is a show worth saving because of the level of its viewers and our loyalty!

In all of our petitions we need to be respectful! Do not lower ourselves to CBS' level. Email TNT who is showing some interest in picking up the show! Email your local newspapers and Entertainment reporters from your local news stations!

Remember, as Johnston put it in Episode 15, the term Semper Fidelis - always faithful, always true. In this our darkest hour this motto is fitting and has never been so tried, so necessary. So SEMPER FIDELIS all!

SAVE JERICHO!!!!

CBS will be sorry that they took Jericho off the air. They'll be losing many loyal viewers. Not just to that time slot, but to the network. Once KidNation bombs, please bring back Jericho. Until then, I'll stick with FOX and NBC.

Jericho was the best show to come on CBS in ages!! My entire family watched Jericho and could hardly wait each week for Wednesday! In todays society with shows about sex, drugs, glorified crime, and violent murders, Jericho was a good decent show.
We will not give up without a fight! Jericho taught us to fight for what is right, what is good, and for what we believe in.

JERICHO IS RIGHT!!
JERICHO IS GOOD!!
AND BY GOD WE BELIEVE IN JERICHO!!

CBS simply has no clue what the viewers want. Take the time to compare the viewer rating of Jericho vs. any other show, on any other network, that was slotted against American Idol. I think you will be surprised. Bring back Jericho, so that I can "unblock" CBS on my cable box.

Personally I hope this "Kid Nation" crap bombs after two episodes and then maybe whoever is making the god awful decisions over at CBS to cancel shows and betray fans will realize they made the biggest mistake ever cancelling Jericho. I for one am sick of all the reality tv shows, even American Idol. Yes I said it, American Idol. And really, three CSI's is a bit much. I'm sick of them too. I used to watch the original but now I've just given up on the CBS network all together.

I don't know why networks keep choosing to cancel the most compelling, well-written, dramatic shows out there ..but it's time the fans take a stand on this one. CBS I beg you, renew the show or sell the rights to a network that can pick it up because us Jericho fans are relentless and this uproar isn't going to stop any time soon no matter what you think. Nuts to you.

Save Jericho!

CBS doesn't care what viewers want. TV doesn't work that way.

If the show sells products, it gets renewed. If not, bye bye. These dorks scan their sales graphs and decide.

Betta off contacting the advertisers and telling them your not going to buy their junk.

Why is it so hard to keep one creative and will written show on the television. Really CBS if you are attempting to reduce tv to sewer water I def understand removing the show. And - I applaud you because from the look of your fall line up, you have accomplish that. Kudos to those in charge.

Anonymous said...

NUTS!! CBS just doesn't get it! They just keep on showing why they really don't hold a candle stick to FOX or another network. I agree that Jericho not only has legs, but also HEART! I hope the show gets picked up by a network that knows and understands that Americans are sooo tired of reality shows without any "meat" on them. Jericho is just that..."meat" for the tired bones of those who grow tired of the same ole shows that are nothing about nothing and for nothing.

What the heck is Jericho?

I've seen the list of advertisers on "Jericho." They are the exact kind of products my household of 6 purchase. CBS is making a big mistake by cancelling this show, and we'll make a point of avoiding CBS, and sharing this decision with advertisers.

Anonymous said...

We need to email and write and call BOTH the network AND the sponsors. Sears is a major advertiser on this show. I sent this to CBS 5 mins ago:

"I have a real problem with you people deciding to cancel "Jericho". For many years, I have only watched cable tv, because your programming generally sucks badly.

Jericho was the exception that renewed my faith in big-3 network ability to challenge viewers and encourage thought. You have killed that sense of intelligence by dumping this program.

I will not personally watch your network ever again. I am 29, white male, make over 6-figures, and I AM your advertisers' target demographic. I have plenty of disposable inclome to buy from Sears. I own a a home, I USED to buy Sears products......but no longer.

As soon as I get home tonight, I am parentally blocking CBS network from my media center, and no member of my household will be allowed to watch your weak-ass lineup. That's too bad for you, because many members of my household DO like your shows. "Survivor" and all the other lowbrow, low-IQ, mindless entertainment be damned - they are all BANNED from my TV until you get in touch with the people who actually support the sponsors who pay your bills."

THEN I sent a similar to Sears, letting them know I was buying no more craftsman tools, or appliances from them until they get involved in saving our shows.

Our family, 2 teenagers, Mom and Dad and Grandma watched Jericho together each week. It was a show we all enjoyed and liked to talk about. CBS pulled the rug out from Jericho viewers who invested a lot of time watching one season of Jericho. CBS should AT LEAST work with the producers of Jericho to give some closure to the loyal viewers of Jericho.

Kid Nation? What a stupid idea for a show!!! I’ve already read Lord of the Flies, and I sure as hell don’t want to watch some lame ass reality show make a mockery of a great book. Why can’t anyone come up with an original idea anymore? Entertainment has become nothing more than a corporate recycling campaign. Jericho was original, Kid Nation is a joke. I will be boycotting CBS and its sponsors.
